The DAM Preis 2024 goes to GUSTAV DÜSING & MAX HACKE for the STUDIERENDENHAUS OF THE TU BRAUNSCHWEIG: The jury was particularly impressed by the wonderfully light, open student house on the campus of the Technical University. The filigree structure of the building is also extremely sustainable, as the steel and glass construction can be completely dismantled and reused. The backstory includes an unusual and exemplary competition procedure that was advertised and organized by the Faculty of Architecture among the academic staff.

In 2024, the award will for the eighth time be bestowed by Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in close cooperation with JUNG as its partner – as part of a phased jury process.

THE LONGLIST
For the DAM Preis for Architecture in Germany, the museum has nominated 104 remarkable buildings or ensembles resulting from extensive research involving an advisory board of experts. This board consisted of Christina Beaumont, Uwe Brösdorf, Matthias Dreßler, Florian Fischer, Gerhard Greiner, Florian Heilmeyer, Christian Holl, David Kasparek, Gert Lorber, Katharina Matzig, Elina Potratz, Ilka Ruby, Dilek Ruf, Heiner Stengel, Finn Warncke and Uta Winterhager. Projects were also nominated by the chambers of architects of the states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony and Thuringia. In principle, there was no restriction on a specific building typology, minimum size or construction sum for the nomination of the buildings. The nominated buildings for the DAM Preis 2024 had to be completed between the end of 2021 and the spring of 2023. Basically, the nomination of the buildings on the longlist was not limited to a specific building typology, minimum size or building amount. New since 2017 is that all buildings on this nomination list, sorted geographically, are presented annually
in the Architekturführer Deutschland. The 2024 edition, published by DOM publishers, is already on sale. At the same time, the longlist can also be viewed on the internet at dam-preis.de. Over the years, a digital archive of remarkable buildings in Germany will be created.

THE SHORTLIST
A jury of experts chaired by Barbara Ettinger-Brinckmann selected 24 projects from the longlist for the shortlist for the DAM Preis 2024. A selection of two buildings designed by German architects and erected outside the country were also included for consideration for honorary mention. Almost half of the buildings are projects on and with the existing building stock, which often includes extensive renovations. A museum is reorganized in the course of its general refurbishment and given new, bright room sequences, a school is extended in the style of the existing building, a former railroad administration building is converted into modern offices and a former speciality restaurant is cleared out and turned into an airy multi-purpose hall. Flexibility is another important theme, be it with flexibility is another important issue, be it responding to different lifestyles with apartment layouts or – even more openly – switching between different uses when a building initially planned as an office building can be converted into a residential building with little effort. The at least temporarily popular retreat to the countryside is reflected in three highly individual vacation homes.

THE FINALISTS
In the course of a special jury trip undertaken at the beginning of August 2023 the jury inspected the five building ensembles chosen as the finalists:

BUILDINGS OUTSIDE GERMANY
Not included in the shortlist for the DAM Preis, but for many years a firm part of this overview of
contemporary German architecture are buildings designed by German architectural practices located in
other countries: This time they are located in the Netherlands and Mexico. The first building was for a
family on the outskirts of Venray, where an elongated house plays with both the regional rural building
typology and references baroque summer residences. In Mexico’s capital, an apartment building has been
created, taking into account the historic façade and the local courtyard house tradition.
